Jamie Carragher bashed Ruben Amorim’s extraordinary post match comments following Manchester United’s 3-1 loss to Brighton, describing them as “bizarre and ridiculous.” Amorim, frustrated by United’s lackluster performances recently, declared his side “maybe the worst team in the history of Manchester United” and acknowledged the challenges the club currently faces.
During the press conference, Amorim admitted to being aware of the historic implications of United’s current struggles. “In ten games in the Premier League, we’ve won two,” he said. “It’s unacceptable to lose so many games. We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you want headlines, but I’m saying that because we have to acknowledge that and change it.”
Carragher, however, questioned the timing and logic of making such comments, suggesting they might do more harm than good. “Why you would make a comment like that is beyond me,” Carragher said on Sky Sports News. “That’s the sort of thing a pundit would say, not a manager who has to face these players every day.”
Amorim’s remarks also highlighted his struggles to adapt to the United job, as he admitted to not helping his players as much as he would like. “I’m not helping my players at the moment,” he said. “Without training and losing games, you can feel it by the end of the game, players were changing positions, which shouldn’t happen. It’s a hard moment, but we have to survive this and continue.”
Carragher criticized the mixed messaging from Amorim, pointing out how difficult it would be for him to maintain the dressing room’s morale after such a public admission. “He’s set himself up for a problem,” Carragher said. “How does he go back into that dressing room and build confidence when he’s said they’re one of the worst teams in United’s history? It’s not the kind of leadership they need.”
The defeat to Brighton also exposed United’s ongoing defensive woes and individual errors, with Andre Onana’s mistake from a cross gifting the visitors their third goal. Amorim, however, refused to single out players, stating the team collectively needs to focus on improving. “It’s ups and downs for everyone, including the goalkeeper. We have to maintain focus during games to turn this around.”
Carragher’s final word on Amorim’s comments was a cautionary one. “This team has been poor for years, but a manager needs to inspire belief, not pile on the negativity. He’s loosened things up, and this quote will follow him all season.”
Amorim faces a tough battle, something he did expect when signing for Manchester United and cautioned the fans and media that a storm will come sooner or later. He now needs not just to improve results on the pitch but also to uplift the dressing room after his controversial statements. United’s performances aren’t helping the players’ confidence too as they struggle in the League.
