Manchester United Set to Sign Paraguayan Prospect Diego Leon
Manchester United are on the verge of signing Diego Leon, a highly rated 17 year old left back from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno as per Fabrizio Romano. The teenager was pictured arriving in Manchester earlier to undergo a medical with the club and finalize the details of his transfer, which is reportedly valued at around £4-6 million, including add-ons.
Diego Leon’s move to Old Trafford is the club’s recruitment drive to sign some top talent around the world and develop them into future stars. Alejandr Garnacho was one similar story and the club will be hoping for another gem from the South American market. However, due to FIFA regulations, the defender will not be able to officially join the club until he turns 18 in April. Until then, he is expected to return to his former club, Cerro Porteno, where he is expected to remain on loan until the summer before returning to Manchester ahead of next season’s pre-season preparations for Manchester United.
The young left back has already made an impression in South America, playing 20 games for Cerro Porteno last season, scoring two goals. His performances have led to be called for the Paraguay’s squad for the South American U-20 Championship, which begins this month in Venezuela. His ability and performances have been hailed in the South American football circles highlighting his inclusion in both club and international teams at such a young age a testament to his abilities.
Leon is known for his aggressive play style, with impressive speed and technical ability. He has been likened to Brazil’s Marcelo as well for his game style. His offensive traits include contributing to attacks, delivering accurate crosses, and even bagging some goals. While his attacking inputs are a clear strength, his defensive positioning and decision making have been praised as mature and adaptable.
Speaking before getting on the plane to Manchester, Leon described the transfer as a dream come true for him and expressed his excitement about the opportunity. He also mentioned beginning English lessons, signaling his readiness to embrace his new life in the glittering theatre of dreams.
Upon official confirmation, Leon will become the first signing under new United manager Ruben Amorim, who took charge in November. United fans will have to wait to see Leon in action, but the teenager’s talent and potential make him an exciting prospect who could play a key role in the club’s long term plans.
