The Premier League's most iconic rivalry delivered another thrilling chapter as Liverpool and Manchester United played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Anfield. The match which was initially a doubt because of the weather conditions went ahead but it was worth the hassle for the fans who made the trip to Anfield for yet another thrilling encounter between the Premier League giants. The match was filled with drama, controversial calls, moments of brilliance and an amazing environment.
United's Early Defensive Resilience
The game began with Liverpool dominating possession in the midfield, putting United’s defence to task with high pressing and quick transitions. United’s goalkeeper, Onana, put in a good shift again with some good saves, denying Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez from close range. Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt kept a good shape at the back alongside Harry Maguire, absorbing Liverpool’s pressure to keep them silent upfront. The trio definitely showed a remarkable difference from last week’s embarrassing defeat to Newcastle United.
While Liverpool had the upper hand in the opening 45 minutes, United’s defensive structure ensured that the two teams went goalless to the half time break before both teams went all in for the second half.
Martinez's Stunning Opener
Manchester United seized the initiative early in the second half with Lisandro Martinez scoring a spectacular goal in the 52nd minute. Lurking on the edge of the box after a corner, Martinez unleashed a thunderous strike off the underside of the crossbar, leaving Alisson and Anfield stunned. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the traveling United fans, but the jubilation was shortlived as Liverpool came in with a resolute response.
Liverpool responded with high intensity, and their persistence paid off just seven minutes later when Cody Gakpo, capitalized on a defensive mix up in United’s backline after a failed clearance. A clever one-two with Salah saw Gakpo slot the ball past Onana into the net, restoring parity for Liverpool.
Salah’s Controversial Penalty
The momentum immediately shifted further in Liverpool’s favour when a controversial VAR decision awarded them a kick from the spot. Matthijs de Ligt was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box after a VAR review and referee Anthony Taylor pointed towards the spot. Salah stepped up to take the penalty in the 68th minute and though Onana did dive the right way, he was unable to save United from going behind.
Garnacho and Amad to the Rescue
United manager Ruben Amorim made an immediate change when he brought in Alejandro Garnacho to inject some pace and creativity into the front line. Garnacho’s presence on the left wing immediately troubled Liverpool’s defence, and it didn’t take him long for an instant impact. It was the 80th minute when Garnacho delivered a low cross into the box, finding Amad Diallo, who had made a smart run and reached before Andy Robertson and calmly finished past Alisson, leveling the score at 2-2 and silencing Anfield yet again.
The final moments of the game saw both teams vying for a win. It was a game where both teams would have been devastated by a loss, such was the intensity of the game especially in the second half. Both teams desperately pushed for a winner, but the defence remained tight. Onana once again came to United’s rescue, making a crucial save to deny Nunez in stoppage time. However, the biggest chance of the game fell to Harry Maguire’s feet when Ugarte made a brilliant pass to Joshua Zirkzee who unselfishly passed the ball to Maguire to slot it into an empty goal but Harry Maguire skyrocketed the ball to the utter astonishment of the traveling fans. Maguire was dejected after a horrible miss and a potential winner at Anfield.
A Valuable Boost for United
The draw though fair to the effort both the teams put was particularly a boost to Manchester United, who endured a diificult few weeks with back to back defeats. Despite a challenging season so far, the Red Devils showed the character to turn up in these big games. They wanted more than just a point and looked unhappy over the scoreline, particularly after a tough penalty call. The Red Devils jump up one place to 13th after 20 games and will play Arsenal next in the FA Cup on Sunday.
