Manchester United’s big money signing from Ajax, Antony could be on his way out of Old Trafford finally on a loan deal, with Spanish outfit Real Betis reportedly showing interest in the out of favour United winger. According to multiple reports, including The Times, the La Liga side is keen on signing Antony on a loan deal in January. This comes as United faces one of their most challenging seasons in recent memory, sitting 14th in the Premier League table. Antony under Amorim has seen little to no action and is frustrated at his playtime with the Red Devils.

Antony’s Struggles at Old Trafford

Signed in 2022 for a massive €100 million from Ajax by his former manager Erik ten Hag, Antony arrived with huge expectations, having flourished under the Dutch manager in the Netherlands. However, his time in Manchester has been anything but successful. The winger has only scored 12 goals and five assists in 94 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United which is indeed a disappointing return for someone coming with this price tag. This season, Antony has hardly featured under Ruben Amorim, playing just 349 minutes across all competitions and scoring only one goal in the Carabao Cup.

As fans, many might wonder, was Antony ever truly given a chance to adapt to United’s playstyle despite playing a similar style under the Dutch manager with Ajax, or was he simply not cut out for the Premier League’s intensity? His lack of versatility has been alarming, as Ruben Amorim has tried him in various roles, including as a left wing-back and a number 10 but with little success. It’s easy to sympathize with a player who seems to have lost confidence amid non-selection and social media trolls, but it’s also hard to ignore the fact that he hasn’t delivered when given opportunities as he was above the pecking orders under Erik ten Hag, that included Amad Diallo as well who is having a good season so far.

A Fresh Start in La Liga?

Under Manuel Pellegrini, Real Betis is looking to strengthen their attack as they sit ninth in La Liga. Antony’s skill set of blistering pace, a good left foot, and the ability to break down defences fits Pellegrini’s style. However, Real Betis faces financial restrictions as the move might depend on them offloading 19-year-old winger Assane Diao, reportedly valued at €15 million. The Spanish side is also unlikely to match Antony’s reported £150,000 weekly wages, so a cost sharing arrangement with United would likely be required.

From Antony’s perspective, this move could be a lifeline. A loan to a less demanding league like La Liga and a bit away from the Premier League’s limelight might be perfect move to boost his confidence and regain some form. It could help him rediscover the form that once made him one of Europe’s most exciting prospects at Ajax. For United, sending him out temporarily might be a good decision too to preserve his market value, especially if he impresses in Spain and also get some relief from the engulfing FFP regulations that restrict their business in the January transfer window.

Fan Reaction

The situation has left Manchester United fans split. On one hand, there’s frustration. How did a player with such potential and a massive price tag end up in this position? On the other, there’s a sense of relief that the club is addressing an obvious issue. Antony’s performances have not justified his wages at all or his place in the squad, and with the team struggling in the league, there’s little room for such experiments.

For many supporters, the hope is that Antony’s loan could reignite his career and provide some financial value on a possible sale in the summer window. If he succeeds at Betis, United could potentially command a decent fee for him in the summer or reintegrate him into the squad with renewed confidence.

As a fan, you can’t help but feel a touch of disappointment. Antony was supposed to be a game changer coming to Manchester United, a player to light up the wings at the famous Old Trafford just like many did before him but Instead, he’s now at a crossroads, hoping for a fresh start elsewhere. Whether Real Betis is the right platform for him remains to be seen, but for now, this looks like a move that could benefit all parties involved.
