The Ruben Amorim era at Manchester United remains rocky, as the Red Devils suffered a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Old Trafford. The visitors were in control from the start, with Alexander Isak and Joelinton scoring in the first 20 minutes to secure the win for Eddie Howe's side. United were unable to respond back as they slumped to yet another defeat under Ruben Amorim and sit in the bottom half of the table.

United fans barely had time to settle into their seats before disaster struck. Just four minutes in, a pinpoint cross from Lewis Hall found Isak, who headed past André Onana to open the scoring. Isak has been on fire lately, with this being his eighth goal in December alone – a Premier League record for the month.

The early goal rattled United, and Newcastle capitalized. Joelinton doubled the lead in the 19th minute, meeting Anthony Gordon's cross with a powerful header. Newcastle’s midfield was dominant, with every outfield player having either created a chance or taken a shot by the 36th minute. In contrast, United struggled to string passes together, registering just one attempt in the entire first half.

Ruben Amorim made an early change in the 33rd minute, introducing Kobbie Mainoo for Joshua Zirkzee, and it had an immediate impact. Mainoo’s energy lifted the team slightly, and the youngster even set up a chance for Casemiro, who curled his shot wide just before halftime. But it was clear United were second-best in every department.

Newcastle Dominate Second Half

United showed more fight after the break, attacking the Stretford End with greater intent. Harry Maguire came closest to pulling one back, heading a Diogo Dalot cross against the post just before the hour mark. Substitute Leny Yoro also had a decent opportunity from a corner but couldn’t direct his effort on target.

Despite the improved intensity, Newcastle’s defence, led by the experienced Martin Dubravka, held firm. United threw everything forward in the final stages, with chances falling to Rasmus Hojlund, Amad Diallo, and Christian Eriksen, but none could find the back of the net.

Eddie Howe’s side, in contrast, looked sharp and cohesive, even with late substitutions. Sandro Tonali had earlier struck the post, and Isak saw a second goal disallowed for offside, showing how dangerous Newcastle remained throughout.

A Night of Frustration

As a passionate fan, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to watch United falter like this. The team’s lack of cohesion and confidence was evident, and the absence of key players like Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte didn’t help. Christian Eriksen and Casemiro are excellent midfielders, but they were outpaced and overpowered by Newcastle’s dynamic trio of Tonali, Joelinton, and Bruno Guimaraes.

The decision to start Joshua Zirkzee raised eyebrows as well. While Zirkzee has potential, this was not the game to experiment with. Mainoo’s introduction begged the question: why wasn’t he starting against such a physically dominant midfield?

Defensively, Lisandro Martinez had a rare off day, and the backline struggled to cope with Newcastle’s aerial threat. Isak and Joelinton exposed weaknesses that have been apparent for weeks. It’s hard to believe this is the same defence that was once poised to among the Premier League’s best by pundits and fans.

Final Thoughts

This was a game where Newcastle looked like a team with a plan, while United appeared still to be searching for one. The fans deserve better, and the players need to step up to match the expectations of wearing this famous red shirt.

With the January transfer window around the corner, reinforcements are needed, but reports of a quiet window because of FFP regulations are also on the cards. If Amorim can address these issues and get his system working, there’s still hope for a turnaround. But right now, that feels like a distant dream.

For now, we’ll just have to keep the faith and hope that 2025 brings brighter days for Manchester United.
