Football fans around the world mourn the loss of Manchester United and Scottish legend, Denis Law, who passed away at the age of 84. Law was one of the most iconic figures in Manchester United's history and a legend of Scottish football as well. Nicknamed ‘The King’, Law's incredible career left an irreplaceable mark on football and all the fans worldwide.
Born in Aberdeen, Law’s journey in football began in humble surroundings, growing up as the youngest of seven children in war-torn Scotland. Despite limited resources, his immense talent quickly caught the eyes of many spectators and coaches equally. Law started his footballing career at Huddersfield Town at just 15 before moving to Manchester City five years later for a British record fee of £55,000. A brief stint with Italian side Torino followed before a return to Manchester in 1962, joining Manchester United for another record fee of £115,000.
At Old Trafford, Law truly came into his own. Over 11 seasons, he scored 237 goals in 404 appearances, placing him third on the club's all-time scoring list, behind only Wayne Rooney and Sir Bobby Charlton. His contributions were pivotal in United's success, including their 1965 and 1967 First Division titles. Though injury kept him out of the historic 1968 European Cup final, Law’s influence on the team’s journey was undeniable.
Law’s style of play and personality made him a fan favourite. He was fearless, instinctive and had a great eye for goals. His famous celebratory arm raised became equally famous just like his goals for the Red Devils. A statue outside Old Trafford alongside Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best immortalizes his place in United’s legendary Holy Trinity.

In the later years, Law faced health challenges including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. However, to fans, former players and his vast followers, his legacy remains undiminished, unparalleled and remarkable. The sun sets on his life but not his legacy and the magic he brought on the pitch.
