There is no shortage of rumors surrounding players and where they will land in the summer. Manchester United has been linked with multiple players in different positions. However, a striker or two would be crucial for Ruben Amorim to succeed in his second season with the club. Which strikers have the Red Devils been rumored to be interested in and who could give United the edge they need?
Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres
Gyokeres is a favorite of Amorim's, as the striker has already played under the manager at Sporting. Gyokeres is also a proven goalscorer, which is essential for Manchester United. The Swedish striker is lethal in front of goal, having scored 38 goals in Liga Portugal this season. Last season, the striker scored 29 goals and assisted 10 times.
Gyokeres already has a good relationship with Amorim, which is another benefit for United. Amorim has faith in Gyokeres and has coached the striker previously. Their relationship could bring an even bigger boost, as Gyokeres has already proven to perform well in Amorim's system.
One major roadblock to securing Gyokeres could be the lack of European football. There is still a chance of the Champions League if United were to win the Europa League. However, if the team could secure European football, Amorim is likely confident Gyokeres will choose United due to their relationship.
With a playmaker like Bruno Fernandes, Viktor Gyokeres could find himself topping the Premier League goalscoring charts. Having proven himself in Portugal, Gyokeres will be eager to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world and return them to former glory.
Wolverhampton's Matheus Cunha
Reports have been positive about Cunha joining the Red Devils. Cunha would be a great fit in Amorim's system playing as the number 10. The Brazilian offers the same kind of goalscoring threat that Gyokeres has.
Cunha is also an extremely physical player, giving him the edge that Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee are lacking. Cunha plays with tenacity and has a temper that shows his passion for the game, even if it can lead him to trouble. The current United strikers seem to be struggling to play at this same level.
Cunha has scored 15 goals with a poor Wolves side, and he could see his numbers go upwards of 20 alongside Bruno Fernandes. As with Gyokeres, Cunha and Fernandes would be a lethal combination. Fernandes has taken on a lot of responsibility himself, and adding Cunha to the mix will give Fernandes the ability to rely on another player.
Defensively, Cunha tracks back into the midfield and helps his team out. When in possession of the ball, the Brazilian has proven he is always looking for the best route to goal. He doesn't shy away from taking shots from outside the box, which can put defenders and goalkeepers off. His involvement with an improved United side could be the big change that the English club needs.
Napoli's Victor Osimhen
Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen is currently on loan with Galatasaray but has indicated that he wants to leave the club. Osimhen has been described as world-class, which means he comes with a big price tag. The striker has around a £62.1m release clause and has also been confident that he deserves a big paycheck.
Osimhen has proved to be crucial for the teams he has played for, which is something United could do with right now. The Nigerian scored 22 goals in 26 games in the 2024-25 season in Turkey's Super Lig. In the Serie A, Osimhen recorded a double-digit goal tally in all four seasons with Napoli. These stats prove that he could be the striker Manchester United needs to sort out their attacking problems.
That being said, Osimhen might be costlier than United's other targets. The club is already having a financial crisis, but with many departures expected this situation could sort itself out. Osimhen would have to lower his wages to sign with United. The club also needs a striker who wants to play for them, rather than just for a check.
Osimhen would be a good addition to the squad because of his ability in front of goal, but the combination of Gyokeres and Cunha is probably a better investment in the long run.
Ipswich's Liam Delap
Another striker in contention for a move to Manchester United is Liam Delap. The young striker has been clinical for a poor Ipswich side, which shows he has the ability to find chances even without world-class playmakers.
Delap is only 22, which could mean he still has a lot of playing time left in him. The striker has scored 12 times in the Premier League season, which is more than Hojlund and Zirkzee combined. Although 12 goals is not the best record for a striker, with the teammates he has at Ipswich, it is a larger figure than many would have expected.
Delap presents a threat on all set pieces with his height, but he also has the instinct to take shots on his own accord. He could be a good addition to this United side that has struggled so much with finding the right goalscoring threat. Service from Fernandes could make Delap an even bigger target in front of goal.
Manchester United has the same issue with Delap that they have with Gyokeres. Delap is likely to wait to see which clubs will be playing in Europe next season, giving United another reason to give it their all in the Europa League semifinals. Winning the Europa League will secure that all-important place in the Champions League, which will give them a financial boost and could convince multiple targets to join the English club.
Which striker should Man United choose?
Viktor Gyokeres is the most natural option for Manchester United, considering his past with Amorim and his continual goalscoring success. Gyokeres would bring his natural instincts for goal to a club that has struggled to find a confident striker. He could be the next unstoppable United legend.
