Manchester United have always been known for their prolific goalscorers. They've had talents like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sir Bobby Charlton and, at the top of the list, Wayne Rooney. However, these players have come and gone, and no current player looks to be keen on making their mark on this list, aside from captain Bruno Fernandes. Ruben Amorim will be wondering who his best option is for the remainder of the campaign and future seasons.
Man United's current strikers are lacklustre
The Red Devils have a handful of strikers already, but none of them have really shown their ability to be a threat in front of goal. The most natural goalscorer it seems would be Fernandes, however he is too crucial in midfield to sacrifice going up top. Fernandes always has an eye for goal, especially on free kicks. The captain has come up big this season, and it is likely he will continue to do so.
Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee were both brought into the club on the assumption they would solve the goalscoring problem. Combined, Man United spent over £100m on these two strikers.
Hojlund is now in his second season in the Premier League and has had 13 goals between the two seasons in the league, so far. As for Zirkzee, he is in his first season in the league and has only scored three goals.
Another option could be young Chido Obi-Martin. The former Arsenal youngster turned down the chance to sign a professional contract there, instead opting to take a chance with Manchester United. Obi started with the U-18s and made his mark very quickly.
While Obi hasn't scored for the senior team yet, he has shown glimpses of what he can do with time. He seems to be the most probable striker to stay with United for some time as he continues to develop and get more first-team experience.
Who else could play as striker?
As said before, Fernandes would be the best option for Amorim if he wants to score goals. However, the captain has to remain in midfield to ensure maximum stability defensively. He can still provide a goalscoring threat, often shooting from long range and free kicks.
Another potential option could be the newly fit Mason Mount. While Mount has consistently struggled with injuries, he has played in this system before, unlike other United players. Mount can be an attacking threat, which could be seen in the defeat to Nottingham Forest during the short time he played. He has only scored one goal for United since signing, but he showed he can score at Chelsea.
An unlikely but potentially useful option could be Harry Maguire, who played up top for the final ten minutes of the match against Forest. He also had the best chances for his side, coming close on two occassions. Maguire is a big threat in the air, making him valuable for set pieces. In a pinch, he could play up front for the struggling side.
