Manchester United's former defender Rio Ferdinand has never been shy about expressing his feelings. Now, he has added his opinions on who Amorim should sign in the summer transfer window. Here are the four players Ferdinand wants to see at United.
Rio Ferdinand wants four Man United transfers
1. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton
Wharton is a 21-year-old English midfielder, who has enjoyed the last two seasons with Crystal Palace. He had a fantastic second half of the 2023/24 campaign and, when he's been healthy this season, he has performed at the same level.
Wharton earned a spot in England's Euro 2024 squad due to his impressive form in the league. Wharton missed the first part of this season with an injury but has since come back into the squad and picked up where he had left off.
Wharton is just 21 and has plenty of time ahead of him in his playing career assuming he stays fit. Ferdinand believes that Wharton will be a good addition to the Manchester United midfield. He wants a good player who can get the ball upfield, which Wharton has proven he can do with a wide range of passing ability. The Englishman has also said that he constantly wants to improve his game and he's "nowhere near where he wants to be as a player."
As with all of their targets, United will face competition if they choose to pursue Wharton. Tottenham and Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing the midfielder, as well as Liverpool and Real Madrid.
2. Wolverhampton forward Matheus Cunha
Matheus Cunha was linked to several different clubs during the January transfer window but ultimately stayed with Wolves. He is almost definitely leaving the club in the summer and many other clubs are lining up to submit bids for the forward.
The Brazilian has impressed in his last two seasons and is a proven goalscorer. This could help United up front, as they can't seem to find a consistent striker. Both Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have shown glimpses of potential, but United need to have a better option.
Ferdinand believes that Cunha would give United something more in their attack. He can play as a number 10 because he is such a dynamic player.
3. Napoli striker Victor Osimhen
Another player who could aid United's struggles up front is Victor Osimhen. He is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, but he would prefer a summer move to the Premier League.
Like Cunha, Osimhen is a proven goalscorer. He would provide valuable experience up top, which is lacking in the current players. Osimhen can be the solution to Amorim's lack of goals, which would be a step in the right direction as he heads into his first full season with the club.
Ferdinand does not want United to take a chance on another young striker, as this is such a gamble. The club has talented options in their academy, such as Chido Obi-Martin, but there needs to be a more experienced player to guide the youngsters.
Osimhen will have a hefty price tag on him, as he is a key player for any club he plays for. United will need to be careful with their spending but will certainly want to go after the Nigerian striker and try to beat other Premier League clubs to him.
4. Bayer Leverkusen right-wing back Jeremie Frimpong
Ferdinand's last suggestion for Amorim is the Dutch right-wing back Jeremie Frimpong. Frimpong is a product of Manchester City's academy but left the club before he could make it into the first team. He spent time at Celtic and now has been with Leverkusen since 2020.
Frimpong has been fantastic at Leverkusen and is just 24 years old. He possess the ability to be a threat in the attacking half of the field and has scored a fair number of goals in his time at Leverkusen. He has also proved to be a good playmaker and has contributed 25 assists in the Bundesliga so far.
The Dutchman has plenty of pace, which can allow him to break away and start an attack. United is always looking to spring a counterattack, and Frimpong might be the right man to add even more of a threat for a counter.
Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are Amorim's current top choices in this department. If Frimpong comes in, he'll provide more of an attacking threat for United and offer another option for an injury-riddled defense. Liverpool have their eyes on Frimpong to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, but Ferdinand believes that United could also be an appealing option for the Dutch player.
