Manchester United scored a late goal against Bournemouth over the weekend, earning them a hard-fought point in a forgettable Premier League season. But there is still all to play for in the Europa League, as Manchester United are set to take on Athletic Club on the first of May. Here are three things that will help United take control of the semifinal.

3 ways for Manchester United to take advantage vs Athletic Club

Score, score, score

This season has shown the struggles that Manchester United are facing with their forwards. Joshua Zirkzee, who is now out for the season with an injury, and Rasmus Hojlund haven't lived up to the expectations that their price tags would have set.

With Zirkzee out, Hojlund has to step up for United in what could be a make-or-break game for the Danish international. Hojlund scored the equalizer over the weekend, which was just his fourth goal in the Premier League season. The first leg will be key for Hojlund to prove that he can step up and try to salvage his career in Manchester.

United have lacked goals all season, but this will be essential to gain an advantage over Athletic Club. Bruno Fernandes has been lethal again this season, and the Portuguese captain will be looking to again provide a spark for his side. Alejandro Garnacho has struggled and has been linked with a move away in the summer. He'll likely play on the wing again and look to get his name on the scoresheet.

If United can get a lead in the first leg, they'll be happy to come back to Old Trafford and try to keep the lead. The match against Lyon will be on their minds, as they lost their heads in a second-half collapse that sent the match to extra time.

Protect Andre Onana's goal

Andre Onana has been at the center of United's Europa League campaign after his online battle with former Red Nemanja Matic. Onana has come under fire after his performances, which has caused United's management to look into bringing in a new keeper over the summer.

United's defense must stand tall against Athletic Club and not leave Onana's goal unattended. Onana has been known to make mistakes that have given away goals, which was seen in the first leg against Lyon. Onana has made big stops this season, which will be important against Athletic.

Athletic has players who can provide goals, but if United's defense can keep their composure, it will be a challenge for the Spanish side to find a way through. United have a strong defensive presence in Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro, who both also present attacking threats on set pieces. A big blow to the defense is the loss of Diogo Dalot, who will likely be replaced by Harry Amass or Patrick Dorgu.

Play with tenacity

United need to look like they are the better side. They must play with a high level of intensity and physicality. The likes of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte can bring that intensity if they are both on their a-game. Fernandes is also another player who doesn't shy away from a strong tackle.

The Red Devils will need strong performances from all of their players. Playing with tenacity will create plenty of chances for the English side to capitalize in front of goal. It will also give United the advantage of setting the tone for the game, which is sure to be physical already.

United's players have to be careful with their challenges, though. The Premier League game against Bournemouth saw a red card for the Cherries' forward Evanilson. Another tackle by Tyler Adams was closely scrutinized. No Red Devil will want to risk picking up a red card or two yellows with the trophy still on the line.
