Manchester United could be in the market for a new goalkeeper, as Andre Onana's inconsistency might convince Ruben Amorim to give him a little competition. There have been reports of the club wanting to re-sign former goalkeeper David De Gea. This would be shocking as the club allowed De Gea to leave in 2023 after agreements for a new contract stalled.

David De Gea's legacy at Manchester United

Before leaving the club in 2023, De Gea served faithfully since 2014. The Spanish goalkeeper was superb in goal for the English club. In eight of his Premier League seasons with Manchester United, he recorded double-digit numbers for clean sheets.

De Gea was also good at making quick reaction saves, which is important for a keeper of his caliber. He has often been criticized for not being able to play the ball very well with his feet. Many of his mistakes came from not clearing the ball well enough or being caught on the ball by opposing players.

Regardless of these struggles, De Gea has continued to perform at a top level. He has acknowledged these faults and has worked to improve these areas of his game, while still maintaining his strength and agility that makes him an excellent shotstopper.

Life after Manchester United

De Gea moved on from Manchester United and signed with Fiorentina in the Serie A in 2024. During the current season, he has kept ten clean sheets in 27 games. He has made 77 saves and has only allowed 26 goals.

Before signing with Fiorentina, De Gea took the 2023-24 season off, which might have allowed him to reset and refocus on goalkeeping. He did not consider retirement at the time, rather treating this time as a sabbatical.

De Gea might consider re-signing with Manchester United, if he was treated as the starting goalkeeper again. Many fans love the Spanish shotstopper, which might give him another reason to return to the club. He could be hailed as a Manchester United legend having spent 12 years with the club and having broken records.
