Manchester United's disastrous season keeps taking twists and turns, and most of them are from a negative standpoint. This time, Rasmus Hojlund made headlines after hitting back at a fan on social media.
It's just the latest in many unnecessary sagas that have taken hold at Old Trafford over the past year. Hojlund, for the most part, has steered clear of controversy, but he's made the clumsy mistake of letting social media trolls get the better of him.
Hojlund in social media war with fan over his Man United move
A fan on X boldly claimed that Hojlund had only joined United because he shared the same agency as former manager Erik ten Hag. They wrote:
"Hojlund is only at this club because he shared the same agency as Ten Hag. Not because of his footballing ability. People know this yet they still think he's this talent that's going to come good. He's part of the biggest footballing scandals of this century. 72m you know."
Hojlund supposedly hit back with a message to the fan in a leaked screenshot:
"Hi I find your post a bit disturbing mate. You are right to have your opinion but stop (talking) about things you know nothing about. That is all."
This is just what Ruben Amorim wouldn't want to see from his squad who have faltered since he replaced Ten Hag in November. They sit 14th in the league after 18 games and have lost five of their new coach's 10 games in charge in all competitions.
Hojlund must focus on his football
The Dane has been one of many United players whose performances have receieved a ton of criticsm as of late. He dissapointed in a 2-0 defeat away to Wolves on Boxing Day, failing to impress after displacing Joshua Zirkzee in Amorim's starting XI.
The 21-year-old had initially been in fine form under Amorim, with five goals and one assist in nine games. But it's still glaringly obvious that the youngster is a work in process and shouldn't have been so quickly thrust into the main striker's role at Old Trafford.
Manchester United could sign a new striker
The January transfer window presents United with an opportunity to strengthen their attack, which has been glaringly woeful this season. Zirkzee has failed to reach expectations since arriving from Bologna last summer.
The name on everybody's lips when Amorim arrived at Old Trafford was Viktor Gyokeres but the Portuguese tactician was quick to rule out signing any of his former Sporting CP players in January. This means the club may have to look elsewhere for more firepower.
One player who is available this winter is PSG's Randal Kolo Muani who United have been linked with. The Red Devils are one of several Premier League clubs keeping tabs on his situation at the Parc des Princes, per Football Insider.
