Manchester United would be making a mistake signing Harry Kane amid talk of big-money swoop for Bayern star

Manchester United and Harry Kane have been linked with one another throughout the England captain's career. Many expected the Premier League's second all-time top goalscorer to end up at Old Trafford eventually.

However, the Red Devils never moved for Kane, put off by Daniel Levy's overvaluation of the veteran striker. The Lilywhites appeared more willing to sell abroad and that was the case as Bayern Munich secured his signature in a deal worth an initial £82 million.

Kane, 31, has been one of, if not, Europe's best forwards this past year, winning the European Golden Boot. He's bagged a remarkable 47 goals and 15 assists in 42 games across competitions at the Allianz Arena.

This seems all well and good for a potential pursuit of Kane that is reported by El Nacional but United should have learned their lesson regarding overspending. We look at reasons why the club shouldn't swoop for England's all-time top scorer.

Why Manchester United shouldn't sign Harry Kane

Manchester United need to spread the cash around the squad

The reports above claim Manchester United and PSG are weighing up a €130 million (£108 million) offer for Kane. The Red Devils' new head coach, Ruben Amorim, views the former Spurs striker as the man to 'lead the project' at Old Trafford.

There are glaring issues with United's squad including a lack of goals and one of those is the desperate need for a new left-back. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia continue to struggle with injury issues and Amorim will want wing-backs who play with intensity and are reliable from availability standpoint.

Manchester United's midfield might also need altering with additions and departures. Christian Eriksen, 32, is in the final year of his contract and is expected to leave. Casemiro, 32, has turned a corner this season but the club could consider cashing in to maxmimize his value this summer.

Why move for Kane at a staggering price of around £108 million when Viktor Gyokeres, who Amorim knows, is available for £83 million? That's the price range reportedly required to sign the Swedish frontman from Sporting CP.

Amorim insists he's not looking to sign any Sporting player in January but hasn't ruled out swooping in the future. Gyokeres, 26, is growing into Europe's best striker with his all-round game and that's largely thanks to Manchester United's new head coach.

Gyokeres has bagged 23 goals and four assists in 18 games across competitions this season. He's tussling with Kane and Erling Haaland as Europe's most potent goalscorer.

Amorim needs time with Manchester United's current striker options

It's understandable that Manchester United are linked with Kane given the lack of goals shared among the team's current striking options. Rasmus Hojlund has managed just two in 12 games while Joshua Zirkzee has one in 17 games. It's a glaring issue that played a big role in Erik ten Hag's sacking.

Amorim is tasked with getting his forwards firing and he might just do so given his track record. He emphasizes the forward in his 3-4-3 formation who battles up against the opposition defense which could work well for Hojlund.

Zirkzee has been somewhat misprofiled by United and fans with many not acknowledging his Bologna role. Amorim appears to have a coaching team that can quickly work out how to use players to their strengths.
