Manchester United have endured a difficult past year amid inconsistent performances and struggles in front of goal. A lack of goalscoring potency played a significant role in Erik ten Hag's sacking with Ruben Amorim replacing the Dutchman in November.
According to Brazilian outlet UOL Esporte, the Red Devils have set their sights on Brighton's Joao Pedro to help bolster their attack. The Seagulls striker has been in excellent form this season, registering four goals and three assists in nine games across competitions.
However, United have competition should they pursue the one-cap Brazil international. Liverpool also have Pedro on their shortlist amid doubts over Darwin Nunez. The 23-year-old has about three years left on his contract and is valued by Transfermarkt at €50 million.
Manchester United's interest in Joao Pedro is long-standing
Manchester United haven't just immediately placed Pedro on their wishlist as he was a target with Ten Hag in charge. Former sporting director Dan Ashworth was a fan of the Brazilian and the club remain interested in securing his signature.
The Red Devils could struggle to win the race for Pedro up against Liverpool given the two clubs' contrasting situations. Arne Slot's Merseysiders are flying high at the top of the Premier League and are leading the UEFA Champions League table.
Amorim has overseen three wins and two defeats in six games since arriving at Old Trafford last month. Rasmus Hojlund has impressed with five goals in as many games under the Portuguese tactician.
Yet, Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee have been concerns amid dissapointing performances this season. Rashford's future at United is in doubt and reports claim the club are prepared to sell the 27-year-old.
Joao Pedro gave United a torrid time earlier this season
Brighton beat United 2-1 at the Amex earlier this season and Pedro was a standout performer on the day. He netted a 90+5th minute winner and gave the defense all sorts of problems with his clever movement and pace.
Pedro could be a superb signing for Amorim to help take the goalscoring burden off Hojlund. He boasts Premier League experience and could help the Portuguese further implement his 3-4-3 formation at Old Trafford.
