Manchester United have verbally agreed to sign young 17-year-old left-back Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno. The talented youngster is on the cusp of making Old Trafford his new home. The Paraguayan was a target of several Premier League clubs, with Manchester City and Arsenal closely monitoring the young fullback.
Fabrizio Romano reports that United have won the race and have reached a verbal agreement with the player and his club. The exciting left back‘s fee will be around $4m plus $1m easy add-ons and over 3.5m based on future performances.
United will be looking to sign all the paperwork and documents for the player this month, but the condition is Leon will join the Red Devils in the summer next year. He will likely be a part of the youth system first at Manchester United.
Manchester United Set To Seal Diego Leon Signing
Suppose Leon showcases the talent that convinced Manchester United scouts to swoop and the glowing reports coming in about the player from the Paraguayan top flight. In that case, there’s a high chance the talented youngster might feature in the first team sooner rather than later.
The Red Devils had been desperate to find a new left-back amid Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia's injury concerns. Diogo Dalot has been playing as a makeshift left-back for the Red Devils for almost a year, and Ruben Amorim wants to address this situation.
Leon, at 17, has 19 competitive games in his name. The young fullback is a physical specimen, lightning-quick, and super aggressive in winning duels, something Manchester United have lacked.
A Paraguayan football expert, Roberto Rojas, added:
“Paraguay have recently developed some really good left-backs, so this would be another one to be part of the mix if he were ever to get called up to the national team. The links to European football show León is a different case, especially at a young age.
It remains to be seen what his ceiling will be, but from the start, it shows he has something that can be very important in the future. Like any 17-year-old with little experience playing professionally, León is still raw and has a lot he can improve on before making a big jump outside the country.”
It is rare for Paraguayan players to move to the top five European leagues, with Julio Ensico moving to Brighton as an example. Leon appears to be extremely talented at his age to be scouted by Manchester United from a league where very few players make it through. The Reds might have found a long-term Shaw replacement.
