Ruud’s Van Nistelrooy’s Future
After a successful stint at PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie, Ruud van Nistelrooy signed a contract with Manchester United in the summer to be the club’s assistant manager to Erik ten Hag. With just 10 points from nine games this season, the club decided to sack his compatriot and appoint the Reds' legendary former striker as interim boss.
Speculation grows over Van Nistelrooy's future, and it's suggested he'll most likely leave following the imminent arrival of Ruben Amorim as head coach. United paid a €10 million compensation fee to Sporting CP for his signature and an extra €1 million for his coaching staff, which indicates the Portuguese tactician will have his own staff by his side in the dugout.
Van Nistelrooy has expressed a strong desire to remain as an assistant manager after the Portuguese coach arrives. He states that he has a contract with the club and wishes to remain on the coaching staff.
Manchester United's results have been positive since Van Nistelrooy temporarily replaced Ten Hag. A thumping 5-2 win against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup and a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League, who have been in good form this season, were games in which United fans felt that their team should’ve won based on the squandered chances, giving Van Nistelrooy an unbeaten record so far.
According to Sky Sports, there’s a burst of positivity in the Manchester United dressing room. They all hope the club retains Van Nistelrooy’s services beyond his phase as an interim coach and be a part of Amorim’s coaching staff.
Will Manchester United fulfill the player’s desire?
Amorim wants to bring five of his staff to Manchester United, including his long-term assistants Carlos Fernandes and Adelio Candido. Not to forget the experienced Emanuel Ferro as well. Suppose they will be in the dugout alongside the Portuguese coach. In that case, it is tough to see where Van Nistelrooy fits in despite his and players' desire for him to stay
The 49-year-old has repeatedly stressed that he would help in any way he can and has thrown his support behind Amorim. On more than one occasion, he said he would like to speak to him, which may pave the way for him to join the Portuguese coaching staff.
'Don't let the players call the shots'
Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has warned the new Manchester United manager Amorim that listening to the players on deciding something like this is the last thing he should do:
"I don't think the players should have any say in anything like that. Certainly, with the performances they've given in the last few years. If it was a highly successful team and you had huge respect for the players within the dressing room and you valued their opinion, that might be something you take into consideration. You don't let players start calling the shots, and certainly not players at Manchester United."
Carragher highlighted how poor decisions like these could impact his tenure at United. Everything will be evident after the international break when Manchester United face Ipswich in Amorim's first game in charge (November 24).
