Manchester United need a rebuild that much is clear amid a disastrous season and a difficult transitional period. Ruben Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in November but has struggled to get his philosophy across to a squad struggling for consistency.

The left-back position has been a major problem for over a year. Luke Shaw has been constantly injured and Tyrell Malacia missed the whole of last season but has failed to impress since returning to action under Amorim last month.

Manchester United appear to be in the market for a new left wing-back and have sealed Paraguayan youngster Diego Leon, per BBC Sport. The 17-year-old has undergone a medical with the club but won't join the team until next summer and even that is likely to be a run with the U21s.

Amorim appeared to be keen on a reunion with Paris Saint-Germain star Nuno Mendes, whose contract situation was of interest. The Portuguese is one of Europe's most highly-regarded left wing-backs who developed under Amorim at Sporting CP.

Unfortunately, Mendes has made a U-turn over potentially quitting PSG. French journalist Loic Tanzi (via PSG Report) reports that he sees himself staying at the Parc des Princes and isn't considering leaving. A contract renewal is now expected despite United's well-documented interest.

This is a massive nuisance for Amorim who'd undoubtedly have been pinning his hopes on a signing of Mendes' profile to help out at left wing-back. There's so many issues with the team at the moment and his 3-4-3 system is still in the early process of implementation.

Mendes knows Amorim's philosophy and has the ability to thrive in the Premier League. His pace and creativity have been on display throughout his stay at PSG. He's made 19 appearances across competitions this season, posting two goals and as many assists.

Who Do Manchester United Turn To Now?

Manchester United have been linked with many left wing-backs so Mendes isn't the only option for Amorim but one that was likely the most enticing. One name who continues to be touted as an option is Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez.

The 21-year-old is enjoying a stellar season with the Cherries and has garnered interest from United and Liverpool. The Hungarian has made 22 appearances across competitions, bagging one goal and three assists.

Bournemouth have reportedly slapped a £50 million price tag on Kerkez, per Express Sport. He has three years left on his contract at the Vitality.
