The January transfer window is approaching, and football fans are already talking about what might happen. Manchester United is known for being energetic in the transfer market, and it looks like they have their sights set on a renowned player.
According to RMC Sport (via The Top Flight), Manchester United is set to offer £46 million for Nuno Mendes. The young Portuguese international has been an outstanding player for PSG since signing from Sporting CP in 2022. Despite having a contract that lasts until 2026, Mendes is considering a transfer away from the French capital due to delayed contract negotiations with PSG.
Why Manchester United Needs Mendes
Manchester United has struggled with the left-back position throughout the season. Injuries to important players such as Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have put the team at risk. Manchester United's defensive play has been inconsistent this season, and acquiring a talented left-back with European experience might greatly boost the team's depth.
Mendes has had a fruitful season with PSG, scoring one goal and one assist in his 16 matches, including impressive performances in the Champions League.
Mendes has refused to sign a new contract with PSG, even though they want to keep him. He says that the salary offered does not match his role as a starter. Since talks have almost broken down, teams like Manchester United can now make their move. Mendes is interested in joining United, especially since he worked with Amorim at Sporting CP before.
Amorim hailed Mendes as one of his former club's most exciting talents when speaking in 2020 before he left for PSG in July 2022 (via UtdDistrict):
"Nuno Mendes is ready to be a starter. There are a lot of quality players, we have a lot of them and there isn’t room for everyone right now."
The major issue remains: will PSG let one of their finest assets depart, especially as they chase Champions League glory? While United appears to be ready to make a deal, PSG may not be as willing to split ways. However, financial reasons and the possibility of losing him for free may compel them to make some harsh decisions.
How has Nuno Mendes fared this season?
Mendes has been a prominent member of Luis Enrique's PSG team, appearing 16 times across competitions for the Parisians. He's registered two goals and as many assists, including a vital goal in a 1-1 draw with OGC Nice (October 6).
The Portuguese's form has helped the reigning French champions sit top of the Ligue 1 table. He's also impressed on international duty with Portugal, managing four assists in six UEFA Nations League games as Roberto Martinez's men went unbeaten in the competition.
