Manchester United have appointed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, confirming the 39-year-old Portuguese manager will arrive from Sporting CP during the international break on 11 November. Amorim has signed a contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2027, with an option for a further year. His arrival marks the latest attempt to steady the club following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal earlier this week.

Amorim, known for his tactical acumen and quick success with Sporting, led the Lisbon-based club to their first Primeira Liga title in 19 years back in 2021. His strong record continued into the current season, with Sporting topping the Portuguese league after nine consecutive wins. Known for an intense, pressing style that fits modern football, Amorim’s appointment brings a fresh perspective to United’s tactical setup. The club reportedly paid Sporting €10 million (£8.3 million) to release him from his contract.

Former United star Ruud van Nistelrooy, who stepped in as interim manager after Ten Hag's departure, will continue overseeing the first team until Amorim officially takes charge. Under van Nistelrooy’s brief tenure, United progressed in the Carabao Cup with a decisive 5-2 win over Leicester City, setting up a quarter-final clash with Tottenham.

Amorim’s first fixture in charge will be an away match against Ipswich Town in the Premier League on 24 November. Just days later, he will experience his first home game at Old Trafford against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League. Fans will look to him to reverse United’s early-season struggles, which have left them languishing in 14th place.

Manchester United released a statement describing Amorim as “one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.” The club’s faithful will be eager to see if his impressive track record can bring success back to Old Trafford.
