After saving two penalty kicks for Fiorentina vs AC Milan, a Man United legend has defended the "finished" David de Gea.
Man United is one of the biggest clubs in the world. Therefore, they have been home to some of the best players in Premier League history. Certainly, David de Gea is one of the finest goalkeepers the league has ever seen.
However, things ended rather sourly for David de Gea at Man United. He left in 2023 and it took him some time to find a new club. From Man United's perspective, he was replaced by Andre Onana.
Now at Fiorentina, David de Gea is playing a blinder between the sticks. In fact, he was just involved in potentially his greatest career display to date.
Man United legend defends "finished" David de Gea after AC Milan heroics
Against AC Milan, David de Gea saved two penalty kicks in the match. This helped Fiorentina to a monumental 2-1 win, their second win of the season.
Understandably, the support has been flooding in for David de Gea. His former teammate at Man United and the Spain national team Juan Mata shared a fitting tribute to his Instagram story.
Juan Mata shared a post by David de Gea and included his own caption, which read: "But you were "finished"... oh wait [crying-laughing emoji]. Numero 1 [red heart emoji]."
Seeing this post would have brought a tear to many Man United fans' eyes. This is because Juan Mata described it perfectly. David de Gea was described by many, some Man United fans included, as "finished" but now, he is absolutely killing it in Italy.
Man United fans will have no regrets about signing Andre Onana. This article isn't intended to pit the two goalkeepers against one another. However, it could definitely be argued that Man United gave up on David de Gea too early.
That said, what more could Man United do? David de Gea, like many of the other Man United players currently, lacked a reason to fight for the badge. Whether it be due to Erik ten Hag's management or other external factors will never be known, but Man United had no choice but to replace him.
Still, that doesn't soften the blow of seeing David de Gea perform to the best of his ability at another club. Since he is a club legend through and through, Man United fans should campaign for his success no matter where he goes from here.
