Manchester United legend David Beckham recently caused an uproar in the football world with his thoughts on today's players, focussing on their passion and dedication. Even though he praised young talent Amad Diallo, his remarks seemed to carry criticism aimed at Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.
In the Manchester Derby, Amad's late heroics, including the winning goal, showed the team's fighting spirit. However, the 2-1 victory over Manchester City was only one aspect of the story. Before the game began, fans were shocked to find Rashford and Garnacho both missing from not only the starting lineup but the matchday squad altogether.
Beckham's Comment
The drama didn't end with Amorim's brave decision. Beckham, the Red Devils icon, posted on Instagram after the game. The club's former number 7 captioned a photo of Amad celebrating his winning goal stating:
"And the rebuild begins. Big win. Big win with players who wanna wear this jersey,"
Many felt this was an indirect dig at Rashford and Garnacho, who have been criticised for not contributing enough to the team. Even though he didn't name the attacking duo, it was clear from what he said that he thinks some players could do better if they were more dedicated.
Manchester United seems to be going in an entirely new direction with Amorim in charge. Players are expected to do their best on and off the pitch. Beckham's comment, along with legends like Neville and Keane's backing, shows that the club is moving towards a culture that values discipline, hard work, and love for the jersey.
What Beckham said recently is both praise for young football players like Amad Diallo and a gentle reminder for others like Rashford and Garnacho of how important it is to play with passion and commitment. The win over Manchester City by Manchester United was a big one. More importantly, though, it showed that the club is ready to rebuild.
Ruben Amorim gets tough with Rashford and Garnacho
Amorim explained the decision to drop Rashford and Garnacho by suggesting they could return to the squad for the next game. The Red Devils head to Tottenham Hotspur in the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup (December 19). He said (via Fabrizio Romano):
“New week, new life, if they train well they will compete for a place in the team. We need Rashford and Garna. It was NOT a disciplinary thing. We have to improve out standards inside and outside the pitch”.
