Manchester United suffered yet another defeat but Joshua Zirkzee was the one bright spark in an otherwise disappointing outing at Tottenham. With United struggling to string together positive performances, the Dutch forward’s display on Sunday stood out as a welcome contrast to the team’s overall poor showing.
Zirkzee, who has been gradually carving out a role in the team, was given an opportunity to fill in a deeper, more creative role as a number 10, a shift from his traditional position as a forward. Manager Ruben Amorim was quick to point out the improvements he’s seen in the 23 year old. “I think Josh is not a clear No. 9,” Amorim said. “He played more as a No. 10. He’s stronger physically, thinner, working really hard, winning more duels and is even faster.” Booed by United fans when he was substituted at just 33 minutes against Newcastle United, Zirkzee has certainly taken his lessons from his tough first months only suggesting that his development is gathering pace, and his increasing adaptability could prove invaluable as United look to rebuild their attacking threat.
United had a poor evening against Tottenham with plenty of chances squandered and lacked ruthless finishing upfront. However, Zirkzee was a rare highlight for United as he started at Number 10 behind Rasmus Hojlund. The former Bologna man was energetic, pressing high and linking play effectively, showing flashes of the technical quality, he was known for at the Italian club. His performance was even more notable considering United’s injury struck squad.
Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp was also impressed by Zirkzee in an otherwise disappointing game for United. “Zirkzee did alright today, he was a bit of a bright spark,” Redknapp remarked following the game during post match on Sky Sports. While he acknowledged that United as a whole struggled to find their rhythm, Zirkzee showed the potential that he can bring to the team.
The game, which ended in a 1-0 defeat courtesy of an early goal from Tottenham’s James Maddison, highlighted United’s issues on the whole. Despite a tough start at the club and the fans also not backing him, Zirkzee showed character throughout. With an enticing move back to Serie A on the cards reuniting him with his former manager Motta at Juventus during the winter transfer window, Zirkzee stayed and showed a big character to face his demons and perform for the club. As United continues to navigate a difficult period, there appears to be growing confidence in Zirkzee’s ability to step up, especially if he can maintain this level of performance over the coming weeks. With the next match against Everton, Amorim will be hoping for another positive performance by Zirkzee.
