Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday came at a cost, as rising star Ayden Heaven was stretchered off with an ankle injury, deepening Ruben Amorim’s defensive crisis. The 18-year-old center-back, signed from Arsenal in January for £1 million, crumpled after a collision with Patson Daka while shielding a goal kick. Heaven immediately signaled for help, clutching his right leg in pain. After five minutes of treatment, he was substituted, leaving the King Power Stadium in a protective cast.
Amorim’s Update
United’s manager admitted the severity remains unclear. “It’s hard to know because we have to evaluate during the week,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “He already played well against Arsenal and Real Sociedad. Today was the most difficult game for him… my players are at the limit.”
Medical chief Gary O’Driscoll confirmed Heaven avoided hospitalization, but tests during the international break will determine his availability. “He couldn’t speak or explain what he was feeling,” Amorim added. “He’s still very young… it’s hard to understand.”
Heaven’s Rapid Rise
After impressing Amorim with his composure, Heaven had started three consecutive games, against Arsenal, Real Sociedad, and Leicester. His partnership with Matthijs de Ligt drew praise, particularly during the Europa League win over Sociedad. Dion Dublin noted: “De Ligt was talking to him all game… He’s playing like he’s had two seasons here.”
Wayne Rooney hailed the teenager as a “real coup” for United, telling BBC Match of the Day: “He looks calm, composed, and quick. Defending seems natural to him.”
Defensive Crisis Worsens
Heaven’s injury compounds United’s woes. Lisandro Martínez (ACL), Luke Shaw (muscle), Leny Yoro (ankle), Harry Maguire (back), and Jonny Evans (calf) are already sidelined. With just De Ligt and Victor Lindelof fit, Amorim faces a makeshift backline for upcoming clashes against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City after the international window. Dorgu completes his suspension, which may see Mazraoui join the back three while Dalot moves to the right wing's back position.
