Flashback to last season, where there were tons of fans and pundits wondering if Erik ten Hag had made the right choice bringing the 28-year old Cameroon international over from Inter Milan to Manchester United.
Initially, Onana had struggled with establishing good positioning, had difficulty with playing out from the back, and just point blank struggled with stopping shots that most keepers would with ease. To be fair, injuries ravished United's back line, and Onana was probably stuck overcompensating for miscommunications between defenders who struggled to find chemistry as a result.
But what a difference a year makes - through 11 matches - Onana has already tallied five clean sheets and is more than on his way towards eclipsing the nine clean sheets he had last season. This is particularly impressive because United are currently ranked 13th in expected goals allowed (16.7). The Red Devils still struggle with guarding set-pieces and were never really able to execute Ten Hag's gegenpressing philosophy, yet Onana has still shined through.
Amongst keepers in the Premier League who have at least 11 starts, Onana is tied for third in goals allowed (12), fifth in save percentage (72.5%), and third in penalty kicks saved (1). The Cameroonian clearly looks more comfortable in his second-year in Manchester and the results back it up.
Ideally, new head coach Ruben Amorim's 3-4-3 (or 3-4-2-1) formation will help establish more control and possession in the midfield, which, in turn, will hopefully limit the number of shots and shots on target. Amorim prefers his keepers to be good with the ball at their feet, and although Onana currently ranks middle of the pack (12th) in completion percentage for passes 40 yards or more, that mark will likely improve once Amorim creates a consistent back line and midfield.
In the coming weeks, Amorim will have many decisions to make as he shapes this team in his vision. Luckily, goalkeeper is not one of the possitions he will need to worry about, as Onana has cemented himself as one of the Premier League's best shot-stoppers.
