Manchester United's 2-1 win over local rivals Manchester City (who themselves have been struggling of late) was quickly eclipsed by the side’s disappointing collapse against the Cherries last weekend. The 3-0 loss exposed several of the recurring issues that have plagued previous Red Devils sides; errors at the back, poor positional awareness as well as poor decision-making all played significant factors in the loss – made all the more embarrassing when the fact that they have now lost back to back home games against sides many would argue they should be beating.
The atmosphere at the club needs a massive boost and in fair assessment, Manchester United didn't do enough to escape the Naughty list this season. And so here are five things on Manchester United fans' wishlists ahead of Boxing Day.
- Rasmus Hojlund’s League Form to Improve: In the Build Up to Amorim’s appointment, there was a lot of comparison between his now-former Sporting CP striker Victor Gyokeres and Rasmus Hojlund. The Dane’s athleticism and physical qualities give him a profile similar to that of Gyokeres, so fans were understandably optimistic about the ex-Atalanta man’s future under Amorim. He has failed to excite fans so far, managing only two goals in twelve league appearances so far this season. This is in sharp contrast to his European form, though, where he has managed five five goals in six appearances – offering a bit of encouragement to fans regarding his credentials as United’s starting striker. Hojlund’s league form will have to pick up if the Red Devils are even remotely serious about pushing for a European spot next season.
- A Healthy and Fit Mason Mount: Mason Mount missed a staggering 21 games out injured last season, something rather unusual to the ex-Chelsea playmaker. Fans were excited to welcome him back into the squad earlier this season, with Erik ten Haag starting him against Brighton at the Amex – a match where Mount was forced off with an injury before the hour mark. The Englishman offers solutions to several of Amorim’s tactical dilemmas. He could be deployed as one of the two inside forwards, using his creativity and clever off-the-ball movement to thrive in the role. He could just as well effortlessly slot in as one of the midfielders in the double pivot – his athleticism and work rate aiding him to track runs and press opposition midfielders. A fit Mason Mount would immensely benefit Amorim and United as a whole.
- A happy and settled Marcus Rashford: Marcus Rashford sent arrows through the hearts of the Red Devils faithful when news about his being “Ready for a new challenge” broke out. Amorim quickly showed his disappointment surrounding the speculations, even insinuating the England international’s camp could have handled things better. Rashford has only managed three goals since Amorim’s appointment and hasn’t shown the swagger reminiscent of the Rashford from previous seasons. As has always been the case, United wins when Marcus Rashford plays well.
- An Improved Home Record: The loss against Bournemouth meant United had lost four at home in the Premier League this season, a far cry from the usual standards Red Devils fans are accustomed to at Old Trafford. A 2-0 defeat to Wolves in the following game was catastrophic. The Theatre of Dreams seems to no longer intimidate away sides – a scary thing to imagine considering the high expectations Amorim has now inherited. Manchester United’s next home game won’t be any less of a challenge from their disappointing collapse against the Cherries and Wolves, and Amorim will have to ensure the players start pulling their weight once the winter break is over.
- New wide forwards: A key aspect of Amorim’s system is his front three. His front line is characterized by two inverted wingers who mostly operate in the half spaces – acting as more of Number 10s than an actual winger (Popularly referred to as a half winger or Inside Forward). This means that traditional wingers like Garnacho and Antony are not best suited for the role, potentially forcing United into the transfer market come the New Year. United have been linked with the likes of Barcelona in a potential swap deal that would see Marcus Rashford join the Blaugranas in exchange for Ansu Fati (Most likely with other add-ons included in the deal). Ruben Amorim will be well aware of the limitations of his current squad. The January transfer window is the best time for a Head coach appointed mid-season to improve his side.
